Artist Bio: Chipembele Students

Welcome to three young artists who live in the South Luangwa Valley, Zambia. Mabvuto Sakala, Lilian Phiri and Philmon Phiri are Conservation Club members and participate in the conservation and environmental education at Chipembele Wildlife Education Trust.

Their paintings were part of a Conservation Art Competition sponsored by Africa Hope Fund and Chipembele. Their winning entries will be auctioned at Creating for Conservation.

These pictures are beautifully framed in South Australian timbers by Semaphore Fine Art Framers - thanks to Sue Blue.

Mabvuto Sakala
Born in 1992, Mabvuto is 20 years old. 


Mabvuto lives with his elderly mother and is cared for by his elder sister and brother, his father passed away the year Mabvuto was born. His brother is a casual worker at Wildlife Camp, South Luangwa Valley. Mabvuto is the last born of seven children.

Mabvuto has been attending the Chipembele Wildlife Education programmes throughout his schooling and is a member of the Conservation Club .

Mabvuto won an Honourable Mention in the Conservation Art Competition in 2012 sponsored by Africa Hope Fund with his painting of wildlife at a waterhole and a beehive in the  South Luangwa Valley.



Lillian Phiri
Born on 28 July 1999, Lillian is 13 years old.

Lillian has been attending Chipembele Conservation Education programmes and is interested in wildlife. Her favorite animal is the elephant.

Lilian lives with her mother, father, two sisters and three brothers. Her father is a teacher. When Lilian leaves school she wants to be a nurse. 


Lillian won a Special Mention Award in the Conservation Art Competition in 2012 sponsored by Africa Hope Fund with her painting of an elephant in the South Luangwa National Park.

Philimon Phiri
Born on 5 September 1994, Philimon is 18 years old. 

Unfortunately, Philimon’s father passed away in 2004. Philimon now lives with his mother, two sisters and one brother, all of whom are at school. His mother sells vegetables at a local market stall to support her family. 

Philimon attends Chipembele Conservation Club and the Wildlife Eduction programme. Philimon wants to be an accountant when he leaves school.

Phillimon won Third Prize in the Conservation Art Competition in 2012 sponsored by Africa Hope Fund with his painting of a leopard stalking an impala in the South Luangwa National Park.
